Rebuilt after 2008: what Windsor's tornado means for walls today
On May 22, 2008, an EF3 tornado crossed Weld County and hit eastern Windsor, damaging roughly 850 homes. It remains the costliest tornado in Colorado history, and hundreds of Windsor homes were repaired or rebuilt in a hurry afterward.
Those rebuilds are now close to twenty years old. Where drywall was hung fast over framing that had not dried, we see nail pops, cracked tape and uneven seams. Most of it is cosmetic and fixed with proper drywall repair, but we check every crack pattern before we patch.

Contractor rules in Windsor
Unlike most of its neighbors, the Town of Windsor does not run a contractor licensing program. It does require every business working in town, service contractors included, to hold an annual Town business license, and only electricians and plumbers need a state license on top of that.
Permits for basement finishes, additions and remodels go through the Town's building permit office, with inspections before drywall covers framing, insulation and mechanicals. Because Windsor sits in two counties, it helps to know which side of the line a property is on for property records, but the Town handles building permits for everything inside town limits.
Many Windsor lots sit on expansive clay, like much of the Front Range. That affects how basement walls are framed and how drywall has to be hung on them, which we plan for on every Windsor basement.

My Windsor home is new. Why are there nail pops and cracks already?
New framing shrinks as it dries in our climate, and many homes sit on expansive soil. Some pops and small cracks in the first few years are common. We re-fasten and refinish them properly so they do not come back.
